La désalpe is a Franco-Swiss word that literally would translate to Un-alps or De-Alps. At this point, I am sure that you are still puzzled about the meaning of such a word, but you might have understood the idea of "getting down the Alps". Add a few cows in the mix and you get "la désalpe" which is basically the seasonal migration of cattle from the high pastures of Swiss mountains to their winter paddocks. This is what I experienced today in my small town as dozens of cows walked through the streets of the downtown area.
Believe me, a herd of cows walks pretty fast so I had to rush after them and their sheperds to get the shot. (click on picture for high res)
