Holidays are over, time to resume with the Sho(r)t Stories series. Let's do so by visiting London and discover all about this shot by Gary Perlmutter. Invisible - Fuji X100 at 1/30 What is the short story?   I often travel into London to spend some time following my passion of street photography. Last month I was on Tottenham Court Road, just by the tube station, when I noticed this woman sitting on the floor clasping a cup hoping to collect money. What was unusual was that instead of placing herself against a wall as most beggars do, she had deliberately...

This series depicts a shoe shiner taking a break in Rosario and is an example of the shooting "from the hip" technique. From the hip because I aimed without looking at either the LCD screen or viewfinder of my Leica X1. Indeed, I absolutely wanted candid shots from this man and neared within one meter of him. To get the shots, I let my arm hang along my leg and aimed towards him (he did not notice my camera at any point). The main difficulty of such shots is usually to keep a straight horizon line and compose well (your...

A few blocks away from the packed sections of Rosario's Florida beach, a couple of lovers kiss by the Parana River.  (click on picture for high res) You might notice the small framing mistake I made on this picture. Indeed, always try to include the sky in my shots to enhance the impression of depth. Somehow I got fooled by the external viewfinder of the Leica X1 and chopped it off, this is partly due to the finder's very tight frame lines. Leica X1 at 36mm, F8.0, 1/500, ISO100

Ultra fast lenses (F1.2 and larger apertures) are seldom used in street photography, nevertheless it can be a great creative tool in some circumstances. My buddy Kristian Dowling has just written a comprehensive test of these speed kings at stevehuffPhoto.com. So if you are contemplating the purchase of one of these beasts, his article is a great reference to compare bokeh, contrast, sharpness, and colors of rare lenses such as the Noctilux 1.2 and 60mm Hexanon V1. And since Kristian wrote some nice words about my pictures taken with the 60mm Hexanon V2, I could not resist and post a...

Holidays are over so the weekly columns will resume. Let's start by having a look at the ISO sensitivity you mainly use while shooting street photography. Evidently, one might change ISO's (or film) as light conditions differ, yet what is your go to setting when you hit the street? I love how clean the Leica X1 files are at ISO100, yet ISO200 is a more versatile setting to shoot street.

When one has been shooting street photography for years, some scenes do happen to repeat themselves. Even more unusual ones. The first shot was taken this week in Rosario as I was walking on the beach front. As for the second shot, I took it two years ago in Paris. Obviously, it would be more difficult for a man to wear a perm, though obviously one could also argue about the lipstick. While on the shores of a river, Rosario has plenty of great beaches. So much that locals called the whole area "La Florida", probably as wink the the US state. As I do once in a while, this is a B&W series taken with the Leica X1.

... wouldn't it be a great street photograph ? We spend our weekends in a house by the Parana river, and it seems to be a favorite among local cats to come and give birth to their kittens. Obviously, whenever we eat inside, there is always strong interest from the cat. Ok, that was my 2013 cat shot, no more, I promess ;)  (click on picture for high res) Leica X1 at 24mm, F2.8, 1/30, ISO1600
