I guess this picture will bring back some memories to those of you that were born before the paper milk bricks. Once upon a time, kids walked do the dairy to pick-up fresh milk. Note that in India, these kind of jars are often used to store the daily meal of students. Technically, this street portrait shows how I prefer to place subjects in front of a uniform background (the pavement). It allows to create clear separation between the person and its background, which is further enhanced by the blur in this instance.  (click on picture for high res) Leica...

Neuchâtel lays by the Lake that holds its name. Once the home of Princes, it is now a quiet and pleasant city. Families and kids converge to the piers to enjoy the sunny day. Old men look for the refreshing shade of the terraces and glasses of wine. As for girls, they are out shopping, indeed late summer season is almost here.  I had the chance to meet Tibor during my visit to Neuchatel, one of the early readers of my blog and fellow street photographers. Thanks to him for a great conversation (under the shade of a terrace ......

Great weather is back around Lake Geneva. Time for a walk, time for love by the Lake. It had been a long time I had not posted a picture taken with the 60mm Hexanon F1.2. This is one of the only standard M lenses capable to create significant blur behind subjets located 10 meters away. Also note that the mountains depicted in the back are the ones that appear on the Evian water bottles. Not much snow is left in summertime though. When I saw these two men in Cochin, it made me think instantly to the "Ariel washes whiter" soap advertisements. Sort of an Indian version with a before and after picture and no special effects. (click on picture for high res) Leica M9 with 35mm Lux Asph at F2.8, 1/500, ISO160

I guess sometimes the happiness to be portrayed really shows. Taken in the streets of Cochin. When in India, it is quite easy to take people's portrait. Many actually come to you to have their pictures taken. The trap becomes then to avoid shooting an endless series of portraits and find elements that makes them appealing beyond the subject himself. Therefore in this picture, I positioned this kid in front of a background that I thought would enhance the portrait. Sort of a Mondrian street portrait in some ways. ;)  (click on picture for high res) Leica M9 with 35mm...

In Cochin, a kid protects his brand new Christian book from the rain. This picture was taken at F4.0 from close distance. Unluckily, the corresponding depth of field does not allow how planes to be in focus. I should probably have stopped down to F8.0 which would have still allowed a speed of 1/125th. The out of focus background particularly shows on my 21" screen but for a web posting, it does not have much impact. "La belle américaine" translates to "American beauty" in English. Yet, it does not exclusively apply to women as it is often used to describe old vintage American cars in French. In the case of this picture, I guess that both definitions equally work. Since our return from the trip, I have been shooting mainly with the M9 and the 24mm Elmarit. Trying to learn something new with a very challenging focal (click on picture for high res) Leica M9 with 24mm Elmarit at F5.6, 1/180, ISO160

How can such a scene be so beautiful and horrendous at the same time ? 350 millions people in India still live in poverty, that's 50 times the population of Switzerland. Anything to complain about today ? (click on picture for high res)

While some look for God up in the sky, others seems to have already found it deep inside.  This picture was taken in Cochin, India. There is a large Christian communitiy in the state of Kerala, dating back from the colonial times.  (click on picture for high res) Leica M9 with 35mm Lux Asph at F2.8, 1/1000, ISO160
