Thai boxing is evidently the national sports here and around 200'000 people make their living out of it. Huge stadiums are dedicated to it and every town has its ring. Even tiny Railay has one, and local boxers will gladly teach some tricks to foreigners for a few hundreds baths. Thai boxing is impressive as punches and kicks are allowed. There was nevertheless no winner today, only a tough practice. Yet tomorrow is fight night and this will definitely be another story.  (click on pictures for high res) All pictures taken with Leica M8 and 35mm Lux Asph

Today saw the release of an interesting announcement by Sigma, that is the future launch of new models in its compact DP series; the DP1M and DP2M. M standing for Merrill, inventor of the Foveon technology. As you might know, I am a big fan of the Foveon sensor and had even posted a DP3 wishlist at the time. I hoped Sigma would build on some great features and make the DP3 a great street shooting machine. Obviously, it is difficult to come up with a full assessment without actually testing the camera, but still, a lot can be analyzed...

So we are at the beach for a few days. Not my favorite place for street photography but I guess tourists also can make good subjects. Here is therefore the little town of Ralay, with sceneries right out of a James Bond movie. And with cowboys too ... (click on picture for high res) (as often while on the beach, my Sigma DP2 is back in action. Not only it is the best for landscapes, but also less risky to carry around in the sand)

I don't know what is up with these hot countries. It is 33 celsius out there but buses have the aircon at full power, which makes them even colder than airplanes. Result : we just arrived at the beach in Ralay, Southern Thailand, but I am stuck in bed with a bad cold. Tomorrow will be another day and I hope that a full night of sleep means I am "ok" tomorrow. 6am, monks live the monastery in queue armed with big bowls. The daily food collection has just begun. Monks are fed by the population and for each gift, the people gift food get positive luck points in return. And a little prayer. Kids of Bangkok like to hang around in the streets after school. Be it for a little flirt, a snack, a walk around the neighborhood or some existential discussions, there seems to be always some time before heading home. Sunset by the water always seem to attract people in need of some reflection. While some look for some clues to their question endlessly in the river, others seem to have it all answered.  (click on pictures for high res) All pictures taken with Leica M8 and 35mm Lux Asph

Lately, we have had a rain storm a daily. It never lasts very long but enough to get you completely soaked if you do not find shelter very quickly. The traffic becomes even denser and taking a taxi is definitely not a good move since you can get stuck for hours. So we cruise on the speed boats that go up and down the canal, and this is quite a thrilling experience.  (click on pictures for high res) All pictures taken with Leica M8 and 35mm Lux Asph

All smiles

Have you ever noticed how modern street photography is often about the odd, the lonesome or the sad ? A reflection of our current societies ? I really don't know, maybe it is just easier to find  subjects looking sad than happy. So today's series is all about smiles, and believe me, it is something very easy to get in the streets of Bangkok.  (click on pictures for high res) All pictures taken with Leica M8 and 35mm Lux Asph.
