There is  currently no association or academy overseeing the discipline of street photography. This obviously means that there is no clear and undisputable definition of what street photography is. As an attempt to regroup some of the recurrent themes found in definitions in current litterature, here are my "Five U's of street photography". This column is willingly extremist and maybe even a little provocative. Do take it as food for thought only, and hopefully it might help you define better what your street photography is about or the rules you want to abide to (if any). And in the end,...

Finally made it back to Paris 6 months after moving away from it. Nothing has changed, weather still as impredictable and still a pleasure to walk in the the streets for hours. Obviously, with a few croissants stops. (click on picture for high res) Leica M9 with 50mm Summicron at F5.6, 1/125, ISO160

As you turn the corner of a street in Lisbon, you might suddenly face a magnificient bougainvillea tree whose vivid colors will grab your attention. It was therefore quite tempting to play a bit on the theme of purple. Portraying Lisbon would not complete without a post on its famous trams. They cruise all over the city at the sound of cracking wood and whistling steel. Going downhill, you almost feel they'll never come to a stop. But they do, and suddenly you'll see someone running after it in an attempt to jump on the trams' stair steps. They are the free riders, putting their life at risk for a few cents under the impressed eyes of the passengers. (click on pictures for high res). Note that I am especially proud of the last shot since I almost got...

We met Miguel and his wife Gina at rangefinder forum meetings in Barcelona and Florence. Therefore when the opportunity to visit Portugal came up, I emailed Miguel.  He promptly responded with a invitation to spend a few days with them in Santarém. Miguel is a huge photography passionate and a true Nikon gear expert. He came to photography because his parents were operating a studio and lab business. Since early on, he helped with the developing as well as the shooting of some weddings and reportage until the age of 18 years. His career went on as a printer in...

Lisbon is the best kept secret in Europe. Indeed, many tour operators usually propose destinations such as Paris, London, Rome or Praga on top of their offering and Lisbon is therefore a little less known. Nevertheless, this city is beautiful and a wonderful place for street photography. Lisbon is often called the city of the seven hills since due to its steepy landscape. Unless you move by tramway or car, your legs will definitely be put at work. And once you get to the top, a long contemplation of the great cityscape with a little rest is always a must....

In the middle of Portugal stands the all white city of Evora. Indeed, all houses are painted in white to withstand the pounding sun typical of this region. It even looks like some people added an extra protection from the rays by positioning dozens umbrellas over a court. And when the owner of the house throws the keys out of the window, the fight for it is a tough one. (click on pictures of high res).
